Texture on the Runway 2018 Recap

Last week I had the absolute PLEASURE of attending this year’s Texture on the Runway, hosted by Naturally Curly and Sally Beauty. TOTR is part fashion show, part cocktail party, and part natural/curly hair meetup – all in one event! It is probably the most high profile event of the year for the natural hair world, so I was ecstatic to get an invite this year. My friend and I took a bus up from DC the morning of, and ended up BOOKING it from our bus stop to our AirBnB in Brooklyn once we arrived. We didn’t have very much time in between getting to Manhattan and going to the event, so we had to rush to get food, get ready and get an uber back to the city. To top it off, it was hot AF so everything was a struggle!! By the time we got to…

How To: Self Care Like a Boss

How To: Self Care Like a Boss

Self-care is a term that most people are familiar with by now, but few people actually take the time to consider its importance. For most people, self-care is a “luxury” that they think they can’t afford, rather than a lifeline that holds the rest of their life together. I’ve seen tons of memes joking about “taking a sip of water” or tending to some other basic human need as “self-care”. While I know it is just a joke, it is concerning to see how little weight self-care is actually given by most people. And considering all that we have had to deal with in the States the last couple years, I think we could all use some serious self-care! Lucky for me, I learned early on just how necessary self-care is for my own health, wellness and self-preservation. I began meditating after taking a Psychology of Meditation class in college,…

Curl Fest 2018 & Birthday Weekend Recap

Curl Fest 2018 & Birthday Weekend Recap

I had the pleasure of attending the 5th Annual Curl Fest last weekend, hosted by Curly Girl Collective in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Although this was my first time attending, I had been dying to go since I saw people posting about it on Instagram last year, and was determined to go this year! As soon as I found out it would be the weekend before y birthday, I KNEW I had to go. Luckily, two of my girlfriends that went last year hit me up about going, so we got to planning right away. Clearly the universe was conspiring to make this weekend perfect: we found the CUTEST AirBnB in Brooklyn – literally across the street from the park – less than two weeks before the event! The bus that my friends took was too early for me, since I had a pre-birthday dinner the night before and got a…

Summer Bucketlist

Summer Bucketlist

Happy Summer Solstice! Today marks the first “official” day of summer, and also the longest day of the year, so it is the perfect time to sit and think about what I want to do this summer. We all wait for summer all year long, and I think it is safe to say everyone loves summer! Especially if you have a summer birthday like me (July 23, where my Cancers and Leos at??) and tend to be in celebration mode all summer! I had a pretty boring summer last year, so I am more determined than ever to make this one super fun! I have been here for a year now (exactly a year as of last Saturday!), and so I finally have enough friends and know DC well enough that I can plan some stuff out and really enjoy my summer. Here is my bucket list for the summer…

Finding Light in a Dark Place

Finding Light in a Dark Place

I had no intention of writing or posting about this topic, but seeing the outpour of encouraging words on social media following the very tragic and public suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain (who is a huge idol of mine), it prompted me to speak up about my own depression. I have battled with it on and off my whole life, have at times been medicated for it (seven horrible years on Zoloft to be exact), have seen many therapists, and have come to accept that it is something that I and many people just have to face at different phases of our lives. The last week or two have been especially rough for me, and I am taking this moment of awareness as an opportunity to share my story in the hopes that it helps someone else. The reason I feel that it’s important to speak up about…
