Why Not Having a Niche is a Good Thing

When I started my blog, exactly four years ago, it was after months of putting it off because I couldn’t pick a niche or a name. This proved to be a nearly impossible task, and held me back from just starting (hello perfectionism and always needing a master plan before taking the first step!)

I had been wanting to start a blog for a couple years at that point, but had SO many so-called “brand experts” telling me to “pick a niche pick a niche pick a niche” and I just COULDN’T! One day, I had an epiphany – I could just make the lack of a niche my brand!

The name “Queen of All Trades” came to me one day and seemed so perfect that it opened the door to finally starting. Not only is it a play on the term “jack of all trades”, aka someone who tries everything, but it is also a play on my middle name (Reina), which means queen. Problem solved!

Fast forward four years and I STILL don’t have a niche, but I am realizing that I really don’t need or WANT one anymore! For one, I have tried to focus on many different topics over the years and utterly failed to stick to just that one topic, and two, I am realizing that being a queen of all trades actually has its advantages!

I started reading a book called “Range” several months ago, and it has been one of the most validating books I have ever read. The author, David Epstein, talks about how our society has a tendency to overvalue specialization and getting a head start on one track and sticking to it, but that tends to handicap us in many ways and also hold a lot of people back from just starting.

Not only is it really hard to think outside the box when you train your brain to be so one-tracked and myopic, but people who have a wide range of experience tend to be more creative and inventive because they can pull from a myriad of different disciplines and perspectives. They also tend to have a much clearer idea of what it is they are really passionate about when they finally do settle into one career or passion.

For me, I am finally starting to hone in on mental health and holistic wellness as a topic I want to focus on. I have now been a mental health therapist for almost a year (over six months at my current job), and find that mental health content is something people are yearning for these days.

I have also struggled with gut health issues for almost six years, and find that many of my friends and followers can relate to that as well. Those two topics are very intertwined, so it feels great to be transparent about my experience and be able to share useful information with my followers!

I also have always loved (and will always love) traveling, and creating travel content, so that is something I plan to continue this year! How I will connect that to mental and gut health, I don’t know yet, but that is the beauty of being the Queen of All Trades – it doesn’t all have to make sense! At the very least, my sunny and tropical aesthetic will hold it all together, especially after I move to Miami!

Although it is not my main focus by any means, I also still love fashion, so you will continue to see stylized pics, reels and fashion posts from me here and there. In case you are wondering, my outfit below is Shein (pants, top, sunglasses and purse), H&M (shacket) and Nike (sneakers). I also have a YouTube video with more neutral winter stuff I got from Shein recently!

More than anything, I am just happy to be finding my voice, whatever topic I am speaking on! Please leave a comment telling me what type of content you really enjoy from me (whether it’s on here, my Instagram or YouTube channel), and what you would like to see more of this year! ✨
